Joel Zimmerman (otherwise known as deadmau5) is really doing EDM proud right now. After a sampling of some of the most brilliant and some most phoned in performances ever at this years Coachella, we can honestly say the mau5 was missed. Hearing the same 6-10 tracks on constant repeat in across the Empire Polo Fields only served to remind what we love about a good producer and showman, and that is giving the crowd something new and different – something unexpected. We returned to our beloved Bay Area with something of this very nature waiting for us… we returned on the eve of the first radio edit leak of deadmau5’s new track, ‘The Veldt’.

In a fresh take on production, Mr. Zimmerman lifted the curtain and allowed his rabid fans to peak in on him as he created the base track over a few weeks in March. All the starts and stops, curses and praises, frustration and elation were laid bare as he birthed what is sure to be a banger this summer and years to come.

They say that amateurs borrow and pros steal, this master work does just that – taking its inspiration and vocals from Ray Bradbury short story of the same name. We have to say we are very pleased and look forward to misty eyed nights with good friends singing this at the top of our lungs on dancefloors around the world. With addicting rifts, lilting piano, soul trembling beats and haunting vocals that tell a tell a story that you want to hear over and over, ‘The Veldt’ serves as solid proof as to why when we hear the mau5′s ‘Some Chords’ we know its on, and that deadmau5 “gets it”.

Even Chris Jones’ vocals were a stroke of shear serendipity, plucked from semi obscurity.

A few weeks back Converse release their sponsored collaboration with Gorillaz, Andre 3000, and James Murphy… Well, in no time flat, they are back at it again. This time stepping up to a venerable quarter munching machine, slappin’ a quarter down on the marquee frame, and proclaiming “I got next”. An homage to Luchadoras and Street Fighter, ‘Warrior’ is a three-way tag team spectacle featuring Mark Foster of Foster The People, Gotye’s lady in leaving, Kimbra, and DJ/Producer/Kanye’s music Guru A-trak. The song is incredible and is rife with all the good stuff we love from FOP(which sadly isn’t the radio play stuff) and A-Trak, with Kimbra tying it all together in a sparkly flame embroidered bow. And the video is just as good if not better. It make us at DOPE long for a full Converse album to go along with our new Chucks, or at least a sponsored stage at this summers big festival, cause this shit is good.

These collaborations are really a step in the right direction in brand advertising, and we hope that we’ll see more of this in the future from many other brands desperate to connect with markets that over their corporate lines. So, Miike Snow is just plain totally on fire this Spring. First, with all the early leaks and sneak previews of the new album, right up the to release. And what an album it is. We give it 8.5 our 10, but the gravy doesn’t stop there. No, to be sure the “Happy To You” will be anywhere and everywhere this summer, the Swedes have commissioned a ton of remixes. From Alex Metric to Jacques Lu Cont, to pretty much everyone worth their salt is getting a crack a the amazing groove fodder the band has provided. Now, Dirty South is up with their take on ‘Devil’s Work’. This “Class A” dancefloor filler was just chosen by Pete Tong as an Essential Tune for Music Week in Miami, we have to say, “OH YESS!”, we agree. See what you think here. This band has been on our it list for the last 2 years, with a slew of singles and BBC performances making us constantly long for an actual LP. Well, much to our delight, Dry The River are finally here with their first full album, Shallow Bed. It’s soooo good, just go get it. They’ve started making the touring rounds here in the states, still openers but that will change very soon so see them in a small 300 person venue while you can. Niki and the Dove have been wondering the wilderness of single releases and buzzbandtopia for the last long/little while. Live gigs here and there, BBC 2012 it band, and friend to the intersticial DJ set at all the big shows for the last year, making people go “WTF is that, and where can I get some?”. Well, the answer to that question is May 14th when their first album ‘Instinct’ drops into our world. With a sound that can best be described as Fever Ray meets Ladyhawk, in the backroom at Lykke Li DJ set, it’s all here, soundwise. We like it, but as much as we do, one has to wonde, is the post Kate Bush, via New Wave strange gril flow set getting a little over populated? We hope not but, it feels like there is a change coming. Anyway, enjoy the bands latest video for ‘Tomorrow’, the first single off the new album.

Easily one of our top tens of 2011, and still going strong in the new year is Anthony Gonzalez’s sonic child M83. Big on our lists for the last ten years, when we were first getting acquainted with the group, we also became fans of Scottish dance sorcerer, MYLO. It’s been forever since Myles MacInnes has released a proper album, however he’s strung together enough remixes to keep us misty eyed for the massively groovable heights of “DESTROY ROCK AND ROLL”. Now with M83 compiling the ‘Reunion EP’ – a collection of tracks from ‘Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming’ remixed the best and brightest – they’ve invited MYLO to tease us once again. All we can say, is we hope theirs a new album with all the trappings of his current creative flow in the near offing. The remix album drops 5/8, but while we wait, this will do nicely.
